RE: Need Tow Vehicle Advice

The stability of a dually is hard to quantify in wind or with a large load. If the size of the truck is ok with you and the trailer is large, consider the dually.
Diesel is certainly better; however, in my humble opinion, the latest generation has lots of potential negatives. I personally would buy something a few years before the latest round of 08 EPA initiatives on diesels. Also, you would be surprised what a gasser 1 ton will do!

RE: South Toledo Bend SP Info Needed

There's a lot of roomy sites. I can't recall any numbers good or bad though. There's also a corp of engineers park that's nice on toledo bend.
Wish I could be more help, but I think that you'll be fine. You might call the site also. Sometimes you'll get a really helpful person.

RE: Trying to book Disney World Fort Wilderness 2009

Thanks all for the good info. I'm getting set up with the maps and then we will call and see what we can get. I just like seeing our site on a map when we say, "yes", here's my credit card ;)
I figured it would be atleast as complete of a system as reserveamerica for maps, reservations, descriptions etc. Oh well, we're going even if they stick us out by the trash bins... and we'll still have fun!!

RE: Update info on Topsail Hill Campground in FL

I'm interested in where the better beaches are than topsail in Florida...? Not really being sarcastic. I really would like to know where my family can go camp in FL that has as nice of beach and access?
Topsail in comparison to Gulf shores and other places we've been is night & day. Truly amazing... I admit that some of what they do there doesn't make complete since, like a wonderful outdoor theater that only runs once a week... maybe! Or considering getting rid of the pool because there's a beach - wow. Wish they hungout with our kids for a while and they would be greatful to have access to the pool.
Topsail is unique for sure. The more typical state park is probably like Henderson. It's nice, but it's not topsail! If they Only had the beach, people would probably consider other sites in FL. Just my 2 cents, but Topsail is the best beach vacation we've found with an RV.

RE: Trying to book Disney World Fort Wilderness 2009

Thanks all. I was just surprised that I couldn't find much on the Disney website... or I just missed it somewhere. I expected a place like Disney to have a really complete website for booking rv sites, pricing for 2009, maps etc.
Is there another website that may have lots of info?

Trying to book Disney World Fort Wilderness 2009

Can anyone tell us how far out we need to book at Fort Wilderness to stay a week in Feb 2009 for Mardi Gras week? This is our first trip with the kids/camper to Disney, and we were under the impression that we needed to book as far out as we can?
Anyway, we keep trying to go online to start getting some planning info and it doesn't let us book any date for 2009. Anyone else having trouble or are we at the wrong Disney website?
Also, couldn't find a map of the campground.
thx

RE: Need advice! sell toyhauler?

Just a thought... maybe get a cheaper tow vehicle since you probably don't put a lot of miles on it and it'll be a nice back up vehicle to your daily driver. We use our dually as mostly for towing various trailers including our toy hauler.
We sold our Diesel excursion that the wife drove and pulled our trailers and bought the wife a nice 4 cyl minivan for the kids and a dually for the money we got selling the excursion (24k). Makes a lot more sense for us. Just have to accept that your tow vehicle probably won't be everything that you ever dreamed of, but you'll probably be doing good to put 10k/yr on it.
good luck and enjoy buying the fuel while you can afford it. it may not be affordable next year so no sense in stressing over it.
We thought about that on our most recent trip to Destin... Fuel was a little over $1/gal higher than the last time we went. Sounds bad. But, it really only cost us another $100-125 total. We still spent 7 nights on the beach with a family of 5 and had a blast for well under $1500 counting every last penny. I can remember my snowboard trips in my younger days with just me and I would spend that much 10yrs ago!

RE: Best Campgrounds for ATV'ing???

Can't help you much in the North East, but further down south there are areas that we have some familiarity with. Where are you really talking about? Do you want campgrounds with hookups or just a place to park the rig & ride?
Lots of info out there, but I haven't seen it talked about a lot here.

RE: ATV & Lake Murray OK

Thanks ABin. We'll have to see what how it goes. Looks like a beautiful place either way and we'll have a good time. Just wish I could take my kids riding.
I'll check out Elephant rock too. We may just see if we can get some place on the water or near a swimming area since the kids can't ride with me.

RE: B & W Turn Ball Hitch for 5th wheel?

Not to be a decenter in the group, as I like it very much; however, it's not as easy as it seems to make a 'clean' bed. If you follow the directions, you have to unbolt 5 bolts as I recall and then re torque them to install it back. Plus it's pretty heavy & bulky.
My previous hitch was a simple Husky which was 4 pins & lighter weight to remove. The rails were still in the truck however. I'm getting ready to sell the husky by the way as it was just for our company vehicle for a short while. Last thing, it takes up a lot of room in the truck bed. More than the Husky
Just thought you should know... We were a little surprised.
Now, here's why I have it. First, I don't unbolt everything the way I'm suppose to. We pull the pin while the trailer pin weight is still on the hitch. Then when we unhook the trailer, I don't need to rebolt all of the bolts. This probably isn't the right thing, but it seems to work so long as you are careful to ensure that when you rehook, you get the lock pin back all the way.
For us, the rails on the husky did get in the way of pallets & barrels so it bothered us on this truck.
Mainly though, I wanted the goose neck option. Otherwise, we probably would have just moved the Husky to our personal truck after we lost the company ride.
I am confident in the manufacturing quality and can highly recommend it. However, a hitch like our Husky can be bought used for $350-450 in great condition rails & all if you look around. Or new for $550 or so. The companion set up cost quite a bit more and may or may not really add to your use.
Good luck.

RE: Topsail June23-26

I would suggest trying to get you an extra day confirmed now. Call them or keep looking for a day to show up online.
We just left the other day and thought about staying longer, but there was nothing really available for a day.

RE: ATV & Lake Murray OK

Thanks for the info. When did OK stop allowing riding doubles? Do you know the rules on Rhino side by sides whith the role cage & rear kids seats? They even have seat belts in them.
How close to they check things like riding doubles?
We were planning on getting to the campground on Wed... thought that would give us a chance to get 2 spots in the ATV camground.
What's a good back up spot to camp at lake murray. We'll have a lot of younger kids with our group and it sounds like they won't be able to put put around on 4 wheelers with us.

Sounds great. A few of us are going at the end of June. Do they have cabins in the ATV campground?
Anything else really good there?

RE: 2002 Duramax Towing Exeriences vs Ford 6.0

I like the cummins and looked at the dodge with the 6spd manual, but wife's not too good on a manual and the deal breaker was the back seats on the crew cab. Just not much more seat there than our f250 extended cab. really uncomfortable compared to the ford & chevy crews. That's basically why we ended up with the chevy. We always have people in the back and the chevy seemed a little more reliable than the ford 6.0.
Now if I had big bucks and could get something newer like a dodge mega cab, I would have.

RE: 2002 Duramax Towing Exeriences vs Ford 6.0

Thanks for all the help. I'm hopeful...
yep, we're around 12-13500 on the trailer depending on what we're doing. As I recall, the dually is 3.73 rear end on the d-max w/allison.
My feeling is that the tranny is getting confused as the motor quits pulling. Under normal circumstances the tranny does what I would expect.
Filter is clean, fuel filter is new (did help slightly) as I was ready to kick it to the curb before that. I cut it open and it was dirty, but I was a little surprised by how much it effected it.
It really feels like there's nothing additional after 2000rpm. Below that it's a diesel... when you really feel like it should be waking up, there's not much to it. I know that the Ford hit much harder stock, but I really expected a lot more that what's here.
I've got it at the dealer today for a coolant leak... told them that it felt weak also pulling but we'll have to see if they find anything. I don't have a lot of confidence in the dealer looking unless it's under warranty where trial & error doesn't cost as much!
One note, we tow these same roads with a gas (5.4L)f250 at 65-70mph generally pretty well. Much better than we ever thought! So I expected the diesel to do like our 6.0 diesel and have to watch my foot.

2002 Duramax Towing Exeriences vs Ford 6.0

Don't want a war, but would like some comments on people who've used both.
We have an 02 duramax dually towing the 36ft 5er in our signiture. I'm don't think it's running right, as it sure seems to work. At 65mph we can barely accellerate on up to 70mph on flat ground. It'll downshift and rev up near redline. I can't imagine how it'll do when we hit the hills or mountains.
I had a 6.0 Ford before and it was the opposite... if you weren't watching you might hit 80mph!
We're taking it to the shop, but my question is, am I expecting too much... does the Duramax just run different? I don't want to invest any more money until I feel like a stock 02 Duramax will actually meet my expectations. Right now it's only a little better than my 3/4 ton gas truck towing the 5er.

RE: Lake Murray OK info & ATVs?

Thanks for the info. I'm slowling learning about it. It's apparently 1000acres and there is a state campsite on the same location where you can ride straight in. It has full hookups from what I can tell.
I also double posted in the toyhaulers just in case.

ATV & Lake Murray OK

Can anyone tell me about camping & ATV riding at Lake Murray State Park in OK? I understand that there are a lot of different camping areas in the park. Can you ride your 4 wheeler to the riding area or is there a camping area with hook ups where you can ride to the area designated?
Also, how much riding is there?
Looking for info before we go. Thanks.
